March 11, 2020

The Hungarian government has proclaimed an emergency law at its emergency meeting this Wednesday. At the announcement, Gergely Gulyás, the head of the Prime Minister's Office, said that there are individual cases, group infections may develop, but they do not yet exist in Hungary.

He added that the government is in talks with experts, including EU countries, on every step, especially with Slovenia and Austria. In order to prevent an infection from Italy, cooperation is necessary with these two countries.

Key actions include:

  • there will be a ban on entry from Italy, China, South Korea and Iran, unless they are Hungarians. The latter will be ordered to stay in home quarantine. For example, they are not allowed to go to a store or pharmacy;
  • there will also be tightening of the Slovenian and Austrian borders with Hungary; planes, trains and buses will not be received from these countries from midnight on Wednesday; but, for example, the Croatian border will also be more strictly controlled;
  • there will be sanctions against those who make false declarations and those who break quarantine;
  • indoor events of more than 100 persons, outdoor events of more than 500 persons are prohibited; this does not apply to workplaces and shopping centers, but to cinemas and theaters, for example.
  • foreign trips are also prohibited for students.

According to Minister Gulyás, the disease is not common among children, so there is no reason to close schools. The measures remain in force until revoked. This situation may take weeks or months, he added.
