Virus Researcher Recommends Compulsory Mask Usage

According to virus researcher Miklós Rusvai, the most effective way to protect against the coronavirus and the flu pandemic, which is likely to be more intense this year, in addition to vaccinations, is to wear a mask, which is recommended in closed spaces and especially on public transport.

Miklós Rusvai told ATV's Start program that it is not surprising if people fall ill in the cooler, cloudy autumn months, when upper respiratory infections are more common. However, since the appearance of the coronavirus, it is difficult to know what is causing the symptoms now.

Many people don't even take a test at this time of year, going back to the community after a few days at home, the virologist said, pointing out that due to epidemiological restrictions, there have been no major influenza epidemics in recent years, with a more intense one expected every seven years, due in 2022.

Pediatrician Dóra Fábián stressed that children can also be vaccinated against influenza and that vitamin D supplementation is of particular importance during this period.

Most parents are more aware of the issue, the flu vaccine has been available in pharmacies for three weeks, and many parents have already had it given to their children.

The pediatrician also said that the new coronavirus can only be detected in children when they are tested for it. In their case, the infection is associated with mild symptoms lasting two to three days, and they are not given antibiotics, only symptomatic treatment.

Experts say that in addition to vaccinations, one of the most important ways of prevention is a healthy lifestyle and vitamin D supplementation during the colder months.

Miklós Rusvai believes that the introduction of masks on public transport and in public institutions may be justified sooner or later if the number of upper respiratory tract infections, coronaviruses and influenza is justified, although there are no efforts to do so in Europe at the moment.
