His Excellency Dr Carlos Tiny, Minister of Foreign Affairs of São Tomé and Príncipe paid an official visit at the Faculty of Humanities of Eötvös Loránd University on April 23. The politician of the small West African country – an insular democracy in the Gulf of Guinea – conducted talks with Dr Tamás Dezsõ, Dean, Dr Ferenc Pál, Vice-Dean of International Affairs and Dr István Fodros, Honorary Consul of São Tomé and Príncipe.

During the meeting the politician emphasised the development in the field of higher education the country has witnessed in recent years, only decades after it gained independence from Portugal in 1975. The government of São Tomé and Príncipe is proud to cherish excellent relationships with Portugal and other European Union member states, as a result of which the country’s sole institution of higher education has a constantly growing network of connections on a global scale. He added that many of their students have pursued or are currently pursuing their tertiary studies in Hungary, and emphasised the importance of a perspective co-operation in the area of humanities between São Tomé and Príncipe and Eötvös Loránd University. As a token of friendship and reciprocity between the two countries, Dr Tamás Dezsõ presented the politician with the Silver Commemorative Medal of Eötvös Loránd University.

“It has been both a pleasure and a privilege to visit a university with a rich historical past and to discuss the possibilities of sending students to Hungary, enabling them to actively participate in the academic life of the prestigious Faculty of Humanities. My government will strive to further develop and preserve the friendly and academic relations with Hungary,” concluded the politician. The Faculty of Humanities has received a number of high-ranking politicians over the past one year, including the Prime Minister of Mongolia, the President of the Estonia and the Minister of External Affairs of India.
