Preliminary data show the number of births falling by 1.3% in May compared with the same month of the previous year, while deaths decreased by 4.3%, according to this week's report by the Central Statistical Office (KSH). Marriages decreased by 6.5%.
Reviewed by MTI, data show that fully, 5,654 children were born in May and 9,601 people died, while the natural decrease in the population was 3,947 people, compared with 4,303 in May 2025.
Altogether 5,274 couples tied the knot in May, down by 6.5% compared with the same month the previous year.
Fully 28,478 children were born in the first five months of 2026, 2% fewer than in the same period of the previous year, while 52,806 people died, 4.9% fewer than a year earlier.
The natural decrease in the population was 24,328 people in January-May, down 8.1% on the previous year.
16,237 couples got married in the first five months of this year, up 3.1% year on year.
