Hungary's Population Continues to Decline

Preliminary data show the number of births falling by 8.2% in July compared with the same month of the previous year, while deaths declined by 2.9%, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) said on Friday. Marriages increased by 3.6%, it added.

Fully 6,197 children were born in July and 8,896 people died, while the natural decrease in the population was 2,699 people, compared with 2,412 in July 2025, KSH said.

Altogether 4,480 couples tied the knot in March, up 3.6% compared with the same month the previous year.

Fully 40,528 children were born in the first seven months of 2026, 3.0% fewer than in the same period of the previous year, while 71,544 people died, 3.5% fewer than a year earlier.

The natural decrease in the population was 31,016 people, down 4.3% on the previous year.

In Jan-July, 25,655 couples got married, up 3.6% year on year.
