Preliminary data show the number of births falling by 7.4% in August compared with the same month of the previous year, while deaths declined by 0.9%, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) said on Friday. Marriages decreased by 12%, it added.
Altogether, 5,922 children were born in August and 9,452 people died, while the natural decrease in the population was 5,530 people, compared with 2,968 in August 2025, KSH said.
Altogether 5,633 couples tied the knot in August, down 12% compared with the same month the previous year.
Fully 46,497 children were born in the first eight months of 2026, 3.5% fewer than in the same period of the previous year, while 81,397 people died, 2.6% fewer than a year earlier.
The natural decrease in the population was 34,900 people, down 1.3% on the previous year.
In the January-August period, 31,287 couples got married, up 1.0% year on year.
