The University of Pécs (PTE) and the pharma firm Gedeon Richter Plc. (Richter) are creating an infrastructure and professional knowledge base worth more than HUF five billion in cooperation, which can be used in the fields of pharmaceutical research and agricultural science, among others, and is also suitable for the structural analysis of macromolecules, the educational institution told MTI on Friday.
According to the PTE's statement, "another huge step forward in the field of Hungarian research and development" is the fact that the university has won a HUF 5.1 billion grant for the purchase of a nationally gap-filling so-called cryo-electron microscope (KrioEM) and the establishment of a competence center based on the equipment.
The aim of the Krio-Electron Microscope Competence Center, a consortium of PTE and Richter, is to "create an infrastructure and professional knowledge base for the structural analysis of macromolecules, based on the acquisition of a unique and nationally unique service unit of the state-of-the-art device".
The center will "provide world-class methodological facilities to all researchers in biomedical, life and non-life sciences, both academic, academic and industrial, who are conducting discovery and applied research in the fields of biomedical sciences", they said.
They pointed out that the new technology will bring breakthroughs in the fields of structural chemistry, biochemistry, biology, biotechnology, materials science and nanophysics, virology and drug discovery and development, and agricultural science.
The research carried out at the center is outstanding not only in basic research, but also in applied research, "with the potential for significant economic and societal benefits in the future," they added.
According to the statement, although the KrioEM Competence Center is being implemented at the János Szentágothai Research Center of the University of Pécs with the participation and coordination of the University of Pécs staff, "the further use of the microscope is to be put at the service of research by involving all Hungarian academic, higher education and specialized industrial partners."
