Liu Shaoang won the men's short track speed skating 500-meter race at the Beijing Winter Olympics on Sunday, making him Hungary's first individual gold medalist at the Winter Games.

The world champion, who was already Beijing bronze medalist in the mixed relay and in the 1,000-meter individual event, as well as fourth in the 1,500 meters, started from the most advantageous position on lane one thanks to his time in the semi-finals.

From there, he won all his races this season on the sprint track. The others in the race included Abzal Azgaliyev of Kazakhstan, European champion Konstantin Ivlyev of Russia, Olympic silver medalist Steven Dubois of Canada and World bronze medalist Pietro Sighel of Italy.

The 23-year-old speed skater took the repeat start with flying colors, set a great pace and fought off all overtaking attempts – especially from Ivlijev – to score a historic victory. Ivliyev was second and Dubois third.

As for the other skaters representing Hungary in this event, Liu Shaoang’s older brother, Sándor Liu Shaolin, and Krueger John-Henry, a former US competitor, both were eliminated in the quarter-finals.

This gold won by Liu Shaoang was the third medal for the Hungarian delegation in the Chinese capital, as the mixed relay team and Liu Shaoang both finished third in the 1,000-meter events.
