All obstacles to the continuation of the Hungarian Grand Prix WTA women's tennis tournament in Budapest had been removed, license owner Jenő Márky told the Hungarian news agency MTI on Tuesday.
After a spell of seven years (2014-20) in the Romanian capital, Bucharest, the Hungarian Grand Prix will again take place on July 12-18, 2021 at the Római Tennis Academy stadium in Budapest that hosted the tournament from 1996 to 2013.
"Although, at first, it seemed much easier for this tournament to be moved back from Bucharest to Budapest, in the end I had to struggle for two years to succeed. Once again, I would like to thank all those who trusted in the competition and in me during this difficult time, and supported our common efforts. I consider it a huge success of sports diplomacy that, thanks to the agreement, Hungary is still on the map of professional tennis, and after Wimbledon and before the Tokyo Olympics, Budapest can host the tennis elite at a world-class event," Jenő Márky told the news agency.
