The number of nights spent by domestic guests at commercial accommodation establishments (hotels, boarding houses, camping sites, bungalow complexes and community hostels) increased – mainly due to the low base caused by the pandemic restrictions – more than one-and-a-half-fold in May 2022 compared to the same month of 2021, however, it was 22% below the May 2019 figure, preceding the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic,.
The Central Statistical Office reports that although the number of nights spent by foreign guests rose more than six-fold, it was even so 40% less than in the same period of 2019.
In May 2022 compared to same month of previous year:
The number of domestic tourist arrivals grew nearly two-fold and that of tourism nights more than one-and-a-half-fold. The former was 451 thousand and the latter 921 thousand. 69% of the nights were spent at hotels, their number rising around one-and-a-half-fold compared to a year earlier. Turnover in boarding houses and community hostels grew 1.2-fold and 3.7-fold respectively compared to May last year. The most popular tourist regions were Lake Balaton and the Budapest-Central Danube Region, which accounted for 24% and 16% respectively of domestic tourism nights.
The number of international tourist arrivals at accommodation establishments rose more than seven-and-a-half-fold, to 324 thousand, and that of international tourism nights more than six-fold, to a total 847 thousand. 82% of tourism nights were spent at hotels, which was a six-and-a-half-fold growth compared to May 2021. The most popular tourism region was the Budapest–Central Danube Region, where 62% of international tourism nights were registered.
Total gross sales revenues grew nearly three-fold, to HUF 43 billion at current prices.
Cardholders paid 11% less with their Széchenyi Recreation Cards at commercial accommodation establishments, a total of HUF 2.1 billion.
In January-May 2022 compared to the same period of the previous year:
The number of tourism nights registered in commercial accommodation establishments increased more than three-fold to 6.9 million. Domestic guests spent two times as many nights in commercial accommodation establishments and international guests more than six times as many (3.6 million and 3.3 million respectively).
The total gross revenue of commercial accommodation establishments at current prices increased four-fold to HUF 159 billion.
