The number of domestic accommodation guests increased by 8% over the Women's Day weekend compared to last year, the tourism site Visit Hungary told MTI on Thursday.
Between March 7 and 9, almost 256,000 guest nights were booked by travelers in Hungary, they said.
They recalled that last year, nearly 18 million guests spent more than 44 million nights in Hungary. Female travelers accounted for 47% of the total number of visitors to domestic accommodation establishments, and, as in 2023, they preferred to stay in spa towns in addition to Budapest.
According to the release, most foreign female tourists came to Hungary from Germany.
The largest number of domestic female tourists came from Budapest and the counties of Pest, Győr-Moson-Sopron and Fejér. The majority of them headed for Lake Balaton, the Mátra-Bükk region and the surroundings of Budapest, with Siófok, Balatonfüred and Hajdúszoboszló taking the top places.
Most foreign female travelers came from Germany, Romania and the UK, and like domestic tourists they preferred the Balaton tourist region, followed by Bük-Sárvár and Győr-Pannonhalma. In terms of settlements, Hévíz, Hajdúszoboszló and Siófok were the most popular destinations for leisure. The proportion of nights spent with foreign women was highest in Hollókő (62%), Zánka (61%), Szarvas (60%) and Sátoraljaújhely (57%).
The main motivations for female travelers included relaxation, recreation and entertainment, visiting relatives and friends, and health care. The NTAK data also shows that 18% of female travelers preferred to travel alone, while couples preferred to travel together: 48% of female bookings were for two people, they said.
