The travel mood did not diminish after Easter either, so, 664,000 tourists visited Hungary during the April holiday period, with 36% more guests staying in Hungary between April 17 and 27 than during the spring break last year, Visit Hungary, a subsidiary of the Hungarian Tourism Agency, told MTI on Wednesday, based on data from the National Tourism Data Service Center (NTAK).
Among domestic travelers, the most popular rural destination was Balatonfüred, followed by Eger, Siófok and Hajdúszoboszló, then Hévíz. The holiday season's booming numbers also predict excellent results for the whole of April, the statement said.
During the spring break, 338,000 Hungarian guests stayed in hotels, a 27% increase compared to the 2024 spring break. The capital also proved to be an attractive tourist destination for Hungarians, with Budapest welcoming 30% more domestic guests this year than during last year's Easter holiday.
The pleasant spring sunshine attracted the most domestic travelers to Lake Balaton, the Mátra-Bükk, the Budapest area, Debrecen and its surroundings, and the tourist regions of Tokaj and Nyíregyháza, they said.
The statement added that the spring break this year brought 25% more domestic overnight stays compared to last year. According to NTAK data, two-person bookings were the most common type of accommodation, while families were also keen to travel. Nineteen per cent of domestic guests were under 18 years old, and the proportion of bookings of three or more people was also 9 percentage points higher in the spring break period than in the 11-day period prior to the break.
53% of Hungarian travelers booked a hotel, including nearly 60% who chose a four-star hotel. Private and other accommodation was also popular, accounting for 31% of bookings.
326,000 foreign travelers accounted for 50% of the one and a half million overnight stays generated nationally.
The tourism boom also boosted the turnover of hotels and restaurants, with combined sales exceeding HUF 100 billion during the April holiday period. Of this, hotels and restaurants generated HUF 37.1 billion in revenue, 32% more than during the break last year, Visit Hungary said.
