The Hungarian Tourism Agency is drafting a new strategy and working on a new system of coordination for the sector, the agency's head, Olivér Csendes said at a presentation in Keszthely (SW Hungary) on Thursday.

At the presentation of a program to develop active tourism around Lake Balaton, Oliver Csendes said he had held talks with more than 80 professional organizations on eleven key topics since taking over at the agency in August.

He added that regional cooperation and self-organization needed to be strengthened.

A first draft of the new strategy is expected to be completed in the coming week, and a public consultation will follow.

Presenting the program to develop active tourism around Lake Balaton, Julia Nagy, the managing director of Innotime Hungary, said advancing the region as a tourism destination did not require any new attractions, but should be based on improving quality, adopting data-driven practices and establishing long-term cooperation. She added that focuses of the program were involving settlements away from the lakefront, preserving the region's natural treasures and reducing seasonality.
