According to data from the accommodation site Szallas.hu, it is the cities Budapest, Eger, Pécs and the spa towns of Hajdúszoboszló and Hévíz that attract the most tourists during the holidays, the state news agency MTI reports.
The virus situation has confirmed that families prefer to spend Christmas at home. A third of the almost 15,000 accommodation units available on the site for the Christmas period are still free. Only the standout hotels are full, with high occupancy all year round.
However, for New Year's Eve, only 10% of the hotels listed on the site are still available.
According to recently published data from the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH), although the number of overnight stays increased by 79% compared to October 2020, it was still 31% lower than in October 2019. The number of nights spent by foreign guests increased by more than six and a half times, mainly due to the low base caused by the introduction of epidemic restrictions, but was still 48% less than two years ago.
