In December 2023, 1.1 million guests spent 2.7 million tourism nights at tourist accommodation establishments (commercial, private and other accommodation establishments). The number of guests was 16% higher and that of tourism nights 13% higher than a year earlier, the Central Statistical Office (KSH) reports.
The number of nights spent by domestic guests increased by 8.3% and that of international tourism nights by 17%. The number of tourism nights spent in tourist accommodation establishments in 2023 was 2.5% higher than in the previous year.
In December 2023:
The number of tourist arrivals was up by 16%, while that of tourism nights by 13% in total at tourist accommodation establishments. 73% of tourism nights were at commercial accommodation establishments, where turnover was 11% higher than a year earlier. Private and other accommodation establishments registered 19% more tourism nights than a year earlier.
The number of domestic tourist arrivals increased by 11% and that of domestic tourism nights by 8.3% compared to the same month of the previous year. Tourist arrivals numbered 534,000 and the tourism nights spent 1.2 million at tourist accommodation establishments, within which commercial accommodation establishments registered 417,000 tourist arrivals and 919,000 tourism nights. 80% of the latter were spent at hotels, where the number of tourism nights was 14% higher than a year earlier. The number of domestic tourism nights spent at private or other accommodation establishments was up by 7.0% compared to December 2022. The two most popular tourism regions, Lake Balaton and the Eger tourism region, registered 20% and 12%, respectively, of domestic tourism nights, while Budapest's share was 16%.
The number of international tourist arrivals rose by 22% and that of international tourism nights by 17% compared to the same month of the previous year. The 579,000 guests having arrived at tourist accommodation establishments spent 1.5 million tourism nights there, of which commercial accommodation establishments registered 426,000 guests and 1.0 million tourism nights, respectively. 85% of the latter were spent at hotels, where the number of tourism nights was 14% higher than a year earlier. The number of international tourism nights spent at private or other accommodation establishments grew by 28% compared to December 2022. Tourist accommodation establishments in Budapest accounted for 76% of all tourism nights spent by foreign visitors, while the most popular tourist areas were Lake Balaton, Debrecen and surroundings and Bük and Sárvár, with 3.2%, 3.1% and 3.0% respectively.
A total of 19,380 tourist accommodation establishments, within which 2,125 commercial and 17,255 private or other accommodation establishments welcomed guests.
Of commercial accommodation establishments, 893 hotels and 925 boarding houses were open for part or all of December.
In 2023 compared to the previous year:
Tourist accommodation establishments registered 2.5% more, nearly 41 million tourism nights.
Domestic guests spent 5.1% less and foreign ones 12% more (respectively 21.4 million and 19.5 million) tourism nights at tourist accommodation establishments.
