In January 2023, 570,000 guests spent 1.4 million tourism nights in commercial accommodation establishments (hotels, boarding houses, camping sites, bungalow complexes and community hostels) in Hungary, the country's Central Statistical Office reports.
The number of guests and tourism nights both increased by 18% compared to January 2022. The number of nights spent by domestic guests increased by 6.2% and that of nights spent by foreign guests by 34%.
In January 2023:
The number of domestic tourist arrivals grew by 6.5% and that of tourism nights by 6.2% compared to same month of previous year. The former was 311,000 and the latter 723,000. 78% of the nights were spent at hotels, where the number of tourism nights was 11% higher than a year earlier. Turnover was down 6.5% in boarding houses and 2.3% in community hostels compared with January 2022. The two most popular tourist regions, the Budapest–Central Danube Region and Lake Balaton, recorded 26% and 18% of domestic tourism nights respectively.
International tourist arrivals increased by 36% and tourism nights by 34% compared to same month of previous year. A total of 259,000 guests stayed in accommodation establishments for 695,000 nights. 82% of these nights were spent in hotels, where the number of nights spent was 32% higher than a year earlier. The most popular tourism region was the Budapest–Central Danube Region, where 67% of international tourism nights were registered.
Total gross sales revenues were nearly HUF 32 billion, 55% higher than the previous year at current prices.
Cardholders paid 26% more, HUF 1.9 billion, with their Széchenyi Recreation Cards in commercial accommodation.
1,929 commercial accommodation establishments, including 810 hotels and 859 boarding houses, were open for part or all of the month.
51% of all tourism nights were spent by domestic guests.
