The number of nights spent by domestic guests at commercial accommodation establishments (hotels, boarding houses, camping sites, bungalow complexes and community hostels) increased – mainly due to the low base caused by the pandemic restrictions – more than four-and-a-half-fold in March 2022 compared to the same month of 2021, the Central Statistical Office reports.
However, it was 23% below the March 2019 figure, preceding the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic. Although the number of nights spent by foreign guests rose seven-fold, it was even so 31% less than in the same period of 2019.
In March 2022 compared to same month of previous year:
The number of domestic tourist arrivals grew more than six-and-a-half-fold and that of tourism nights more than four-and-a-half-fold. The former was 330,000 and the latter 747 ,000 . 78% of the nights were spent at hotels, their number rising more than six-fold compared to a year earlier. Turnover in boarding houses and community hostels grew 2.1-fold and 1.8-fold respectively compared to March last year. The most popular tourist regions were Lake Balaton and the Budapest-Central Danube Region, both of which accounted for nearly a fifth of domestic tourism nights.
The number of international tourist arrivals at accommodation establishments rose more than ten-fold, to 277 thousand, and that of international tourism nights seven-fold, to a total 680 thousand. 87% of tourism nights were spent at hotels, which was an eight-fold growth compared to March 2021. The most popular tourism region was the Budapest–Central Danube Region, where two thirds of international tourism nights were registered.
Total gross sales revenues grew six-and-a-half-fold, to HUF 32 billion at current prices.
In March 2022:
1,872 commercial accommodation establishments, including 719 hotels and 764 boarding houses, were open for part of or all over the month.
Domestic guests accounted for 52% of all tourism nights.
In January-March 2022 compared to the same period of the previous year:
The number of tourism nights registered in commercial accommodation establishments increased four-fold to 3.5 million. Domestic guests spent three times as many nights in commercial accommodation establishments and international guests nearly six times as many (1.8 million and 1.6 million respectively).
The total gross revenue of commercial accommodation establishments at current prices increased more than fivefold to HUF 78 billion.
