The number of guests in commercial accommodation decreased by 1% and the number of nights spent decreased by 0.4% in February 2023 compared to February 2022. The number of domestic guests decreased, while the number of foreign guests increased, according to data by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH).
The published figures suggest that 552,000 guests spent 1.4 million nights in commercial accommodation (hotels, guesthouses, campsites, holiday homes, collective accommodation) in February 2023. Total nights spent were split 50/50 between domestic and foreign guests.
The number of domestic guests decreased by 11% and the number of nights by 13% compared to the same month last year. The number of guests was 305,000 and the number of nights spent was 694,000. 77% of the latter were spent in hotels, where the number of nights spent was 11% lower than a year earlier.
Turnover in bed and breakfasts fell by 17% and in collective accommodation by 19% compared to February 2022. The two most popular tourist regions, Budapest-Central Danube Region and Lake Balaton, recorded 27% and 17% of domestic guest nights respectively.
In February, the number of foreign visitors increased by 16% and the number of overnight stays by 17% compared to the same month last year. A total of 247,000 guests stayed in accommodation for 686,000 nights. Of these, 83% were spent in hotels, where the number of nights spent was 17% higher than a year earlier. The Budapest-Central Danube Region was the most popular tourist region, with 65% of foreign guest nights.
