The number of travelers in Hungary surpassed 15 million by the end of September, Visit Hungary, a unit of the Hungarian Tourism Agency (MTÜ), said on Monday based on figures from the National Tourism Data Service Center (NTAK).
Visit Hungary CEO Olivér Csendes said that "the fact that we exceeded the fifteen millionth guest mark three weeks earlier this year than last year clearly shows that Hungary's tourist appeal is continuously strengthening."
The number of foreign and domestic travelers were around equal, Visit Hungary said.
Among foreign travelers, Budapest was the most popular destination with 36pc of visitors going there. Most travelers arrived from Germany, followed by guests from Poland, Romania and the United Kingdom.
For domestic travelers, the most popular destination was the area around Lake Balaton, followed by the mountainous regions of Bükk and Mátra and then the capital.
