Siemens Mobility is developing a driver assistance system in the Hungarian capital. The project is another step towards safe transport in Budapest. Specialized for trams, the system will help drivers and improve traffic safety.
The usefulness of driver assistance systems is unquestionable. BKV Plc, as the largest provider of public transport in Budapest, aims not only to ensure fast and comfortable journeys, but also to protect passengers and other road users in this joint project between BKV and Siemens Mobility.
Siemens Mobility's current tram-specific driver assistance system, STA (Siemens Tram Assistant), helps drivers by detecting and warning of risky traffic situations. The technology can reduce the number and scale of human-caused incidents and, in doing so, can make a significant contribution to safer traffic.
Representatives of BKV and Siemens Mobility presented the system ro the press and other guests this Wednesday. The project managers underlined the importance of the cooperation and concluded the event by inviting the participants to the test tram, where they could see the STA in operation.
The current test, which is called "silent mode", i.e. without sound and light signals, is being carried out on one of the Combino trams in passenger service, with the primary objective of collecting data and experience and, once evaluated, fine-tuning the system.
Péter Dániel Borbás, BKV's tramway operations director, stressed that "BKV is constantly striving to make the capital's transport, including public transport, as safe as possible. As the largest public transport operator in Budapest, we know exactly what role BKV plays in this. Our role and commitment is to consider any technology that can help us achieve this goal."
The STA system is characterized by sensors installed on the vehicle that monitor the tram's direction of travel and the traffic environment. Moreover, the system not only detects traffic, pedestrians and other vehicles, but also compares their movements with the speed and direction of the tram.
