Hungarian wines are extremely popular in Europe, with a significant proportion of them being sold in Slovakia, Germany and the Czech Republic. Hungarian bottled wines are also very popular in Belgium and Spain, but even China and the United States get plenty of Hungarian wines, the financial website penzcentrum.hu writes.
In cask form, the Slovak, German and French consumers are the biggest buyers. It is not only Tokaj wine that is popular abroad; according to one of the country's leading wine exporters, Szürkebarát, Egri Bikavér and Irsai Olivér are also bought in large quantities in foreign markets.
136,492 tons of Hungarian wine were exported to various countries in 2022. This is an increase of almost 25% compared to 2021, as reported by the Hungarian Central Statistical Office (KSH). True, there was a drop in 2021 compared to 2020, but in 2022, the export volume was 5.7% higher than the 129,142 tons net exported in 2020.
Hungarian wine is imported in large quantities by Slovaks, Germans and Czechs. In recent years, the United Kingdom has also been buying large quantities and values of Hungarian wine, however, there was a drop there in 2021.
According to KSH export data, both in terms of border parity and net weight, the largest buyers of Hungarian wine are the Slovaks, Czechs and Germans. In value terms, Spain, France and Belgium are next in the list, and the UK is the 7th largest importer, although it was in the TOP3 in previous years. However, France and Romania are still in the TOP5 in terms of net weight purchased.
