Hungarian paddlers won 17 medals (including 7 gold) at the World Kayak and Canoeing Championships in Duisburg, Germany this past week-end, finishing second on the medal table behind the host nation but in front of Russia and Canada.
Five of the seven gold medals were produced by women kayakers. In the individual events, Danuta Kozák won the 500-meter and Erika Medveczky the 1,000-meter race. Kozák was also a member of the kayak-four team that won the 500-meter race where her teammates were Gabriella Szabó, Krisztina Fazekas-Zur and Ninetta Vad.
The duo of Szabó and Fazekas-Zur won the double-kayak event at 1,000 meters and Fazekas-Zur was also member of the Hungarian team that won the single-kayak relay event. The other members of the relay-team were Kozák, Vad and Natasa Janics-Douchev.
The other two Hungarian gold medals came in the men’s canoe events at 1,000 meters with Attila Vajda winning the single kayak race and the duo of Henrik Vasbányai and Róbert Mike the double-kayak race.
All in all, Hungarians also won five silver and five bronze medals.
