Ticket sales in Budapest public transport did not increase in the past year despite a significant rise in fuel prices over the same period, the Hungarian business daily Napi Gazdaság reported on Tuesday.
Budapest transport company BKV sold some 3.14 million tickets and passes sold in November last year, almost unchanged from a year earlier. In December 2010, some 3.48 million BKV tickets were sold, as against over 4 million a year earlier.
BKV transports around 1.3 billion passengers each year and ticket sales generate a monthly average income of 4 billion forints (EUR 14.8m), the daily said.
Total debts BKV has accumulated amount to 800 billion forints (EUR 2.9bn), daily Magyar Nemzet reported on Tuesday. The City Council, however, decided against increasing tariffs, the paper said. The government, Magyar Nemzet learnt, may transfer 19 billion forints to help BKV in March.
