Hungarian constitution: celebration and protest

The Hungarian governing parties have celebrated the 5th anniversary of the country’s new constitution, the Fundamental Law, At the same time, a few hundred people protested against the Law and the plan to move PM Viktor Orbán's office to the Buda Castle at the cost of HUF tens of billions when public healthcare is in poor conditions.

Five years ago, it was only the governing Fidesz and its small satellite party Christian Democrats who voted (with their then exisiting two-thirds majority) for replacing the Hungarian Constitution with a Fundamental Law widely criticized by all the other parties of the political spectrum. The govenment refused calls to hold a referendum on the issue.

At that time, PM Viktor Orbán said the Fundamental Law was as firm as granite. However, since then, ruling party Fidesz has rewritten it five times and is planning a 6th modification.
