Mol Upgrades Hydrogen Filling Station in Bratislava

Hungary’s Mol Group has taken another step towards the development of hydrogen mobility by upgrading its hydrogen filling station for buses and trucks in Bratislava, Mol told MTI on Tuesday.

According to the statement, the filling station in the Slovakian capital, located on the territory of the group's subsidiary SlA Bratislava refinery, which was inaugurated in 2022, will be operated by Messer Slovnaft, a joint venture between Slovnaft and Messer Tatragas. Thanks to the modernization, it now provides a higher pressure of 350 bars for refueling hydrogen buses and trucks, ensuring a longer range.

As a fuel, hydrogen is a sustainable alternative, especially for freight transport, trucks and public transport. Hydrogen-powered vehicles have a number of advantages: they provide quiet operation without emissions, longer range and can be recharged quickly compared to battery electric vehicles, they added.

The announcement recalled that the largest green hydrogen plant in Central and Eastern Europe, with a capacity of 10 megawatts, started operation last year at the Mol Group's Százhalombatta refinery, south pf Budapest. The facility uses electricity from renewable sources to break down water into hydrogen and oxygen. The 1,600 tons of clean, carbon-neutral green hydrogen produced here each year will be used in fuel production, but there are also plans to use it in the transport sector. Following the plant in Százhalombatta, similar electrolysis units are being prepared in Bratislava and Rijeka, Croatia.
