Hungary to Build Strong Diplomatic Corps

Hungarian foreign policy will not be guided by party interests or the interests of a third country but by the interests of a sovereign Hungary, Anita Orbán, nominee for minister of foreign affairs, said during a hearing at Monday’s session of parliament's foreign affairs committee. She added that her ministry would build a strong diplomatic corps.

The Tisza Party politician said that their goal was to resolve contentious issues in all relations, while consistently and predictably representing genuine Hungarian interests.

The goal is to strengthen Hungary’s role as a predictable, reliable, and cooperative partner by placing great emphasis on cooperation, while at the same time standing up for the country’s interests in a firm and constructive manner, she said.

She said the most effective way to uphold Hungary's national values and interests, while preserving sovereignty, is through European cooperation. Tisza received a massive mandate from Hungarians in the election, she said, adding that Hungarians chose Europe over an eastward-oriented foreign policy.

As a result, Hungary will place Europe at the center and assert its interests within the Western alliance system, she said.

She also said that national sovereignty did not mean undermining allies or questioning shared values, but rather a diversified network of relationships and predictable cooperation.

Orban said they would build a strong diplomatic corps, separating foreign economic affairs from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, formulating a new foreign policy strategy, and returning the Hungarian Institute of International Affairs and the Information Office to the ministry.

She said that ensuring access to EU funds will be a priority. Hungary will once again be a cooperating partner in the European Union, and transatlantic relations will retain key importance, she added.

It is in Hungary’s interest to have a stronger Europe that coordinates better on security issues and is capable of cooperating effectively with the United States, she said. In the changing international environment, maintaining stable alliance systems is a top priority, she added.

Regarding Russia, she said the new Hungarian government would adopt a transparent approach. Due to its regional role, Russia remains an important partner, but relations cannot be based on one-sided dependence, she said. In terms of relations with Russia, she said Hungary will strive in the future to establish a transparent system of relations between two sovereign states based on mutual interests.

At the regional level, she said the Visegrad Group (V4) cooperation would be at the center of Hungary’s new foreign policy. A key element of V4 cooperation is the normalisation of Hungarian-Polish relations, which is why the Prime Minister’s first trip will take him to Warsaw as early as next week, she added.

At the same time, respect for the rights of Hungarian ethnic communities beyond the border, in accordance with EU and international law, is a fundamental prerequisite for balanced and productive bilateral relations, she said.

The government will work to promote the strengthening of Hungarian communities beyond the border and their well-being in their homeland by resolving bilateral relations, she said.
