The E.ON Hungária Group has completed its comprehensive electricity grid development program, which was launched in 2022. The goal of these investments was to ensure that the grid is capable of integrating as much electricity as possible from weather-dependent renewable energy sources, particularly energy generated by residential solar systems.

Energy consumption has undergone significant changes in recent years. In Hungary – in line with European Union targets – the number and capacity of solar power plants have steadily increased, while energy demand has also risen. During daylight hours, more and more electricity is being generated by solar panel systems; however, it is often not used where and when it is produced. This justifies the comprehensive development of the grid and the necessary capacity expansion.

As part of these projects, six new substations were built, and several existing facilities were expanded as part of a series of developments by the corporate group operating the power grid in Transdanubia, Pest County, and Budapest. These investments ensure the energy supply for entire regions. Examples include the Tolna-Mözs substation serving the Szekszárd area, the green-roofed Kelenföld substation, and the Őrmező substation built in Budapest. In addition, capacity expansions took place at several locations – such as Ráckeve, Biatorbágy, Dunavarsány, Angyalföld, and Zugló. Some substations received higher-capacity transformers, while in other locations, the network’s capacity was increased through the installation of new equipment.

More than 1,800 kilometers of low- and medium-voltage networks were built or upgraded, and more than 2,800 new or modernized transformers were put into service to meet growing energy demands. In addition, thousands of digitalization and operational management improvements were implemented, contributing to the reliability of the power supply and faster resolution of power outages. These developments have made it more efficient to meet the needs of residential, business, and industrial customers, and they enable the implementation of new investments. As a result of these investments, the reliability of the power supply has also increased. The entire series of developments has created more than 1,000 MW of additional capacity, which has enabled the connection of new solar power capacity.
