HungaroControl's air traffic controllers managed 452,414 flights in Hungarian airspace in January-June 2026, 1.8% fewer than in the same period a year earlier, the state-owned company said.

June was the busiest month of the year so far with 97,232 flights. In the first six months the number of flights the ATCs managed that only passed through Hungarian airspace was down by 7% while the number of flights headed to or departing from Budapest was up 3.7%.

The decline in transit traffic can be primarily explained by geopolitical events affecting international air traffic, such as the conflict in the Middle East and the temporary restrictions on certain airspaces. In addition, route optimisations by airlines have led to the reorganisation of some air traffic between Europe and the Middle East region.

The UEFA Champions League final held in Budapest at the end of May significantly increased traffic at Budapest's Ferenc Liszt International Airport, with 759 aircraft taking off and landing on the busiest day, HungaroControl said.
