Hungarian transport and investment minister Dávid Vitézy, has announced plans to build a continuous network of cycle paths connecting the city of Győr in the northwest of the country with the capital.

As part of this, a direct cycle path from Komárom via Esztergom to the Danube Bend is being developed now in the framework of the EuroVelo 6 network, the minister said in a social media post on Friday.

Cycling infrastructure has already been built on several sections along the Slovak-Hungarian border, but a coherent, modern network has not yet been created, he said. According to the current plans, the section between Esztergom and Tát will be replaced with a new, safer route with HUF 2.8 billion (EUR 7.7 million) of funds from the Integrated Transport Development Operative Program Plus of the European Union, he added.

The planning for this is starting now, and construction could begin in 2028. The goal is to lead the cycle path to the Mária Valéria bridge connecting Hungary and Slovakia over the River Danube in Esztergom, Dávid Vitézy said.

The EuroVelo cycle paths cover the entire continent and aim to create the conditions for high-quality cycling tourism. In addition, in several places they act as a major thoroughfare used not only by tourists, but also by those cycling to work or school, the minister added.
