Hungarian and European beekeepers have a dramatic year behind them. Acacia honey sold on the free market is already sold out, traders in European markets will certainly not have access to it until next season.
When the acacia was flowering, in the first weeks of May, the nights were much colder than usual, so about 80% of the flower buds froze, Péter Bross, president of the Hungarian National Beekeeping Association (OMME), told the daily Magyar Nemzet. Due to the record low yield, the purchase price of acacia honey increased by more than 60% in five months.
The weather was bad when both sunflowers and lindens were in bloom, and rapeseed was practically taken away by the unprecedented spring drought in most of the country this year.
