After Malta, Hungary has seen the highest growth in the number of new purely electric cars registered in the first nine months of this year, according to a post on the Ministry of Energy (EM)'s social media page.
The Mediterranean island nation has reclaimed the top spot with 83.2%, while Hungary is again the silver medalist, with a year-on-year increase of more than one and a half times to 55.6%.
The Czechs are third on the imaginary podium with 55.3%, a slight gap. At EU level, the statistics show a 5. 8% drop, but still more than one million purely electric cars were in service in member states between January and September, the post said.
It added that the regular data collection by the European Automobile Manufacturers' Association (ACEA) shows a 73.4% increase for September in the Hungarian market.
Hungary is also among the European leaders, with only the Czech Republic, Croatia and Cyprus boasting higher September figures.
While only seven member states recorded an increase in the number of e-cars registered in August compared to the same month in 2023, last month, eighteen countries recorded positive figures and the EU average also showed a near 10% increase.
The number of cars with electric drive only and the most environmentally friendly passenger cars in Hungary also exceeded 60,000 this summer, according to the statement. EM expects to double this figure by 2026. The ministry is taking action to this end: it is supporting the uptake of electromobility and the greening of road transport with a total of almost HUF 60 billion in two programs.
