Two-thirds of those planning to buy a car in Hungary would prefer to buy a used car, with the average car being older than 6 years, according to a representative survey conducted by Das WeltAuto online, which was reported to MTI.
The survey involved individuals aged 18 and over who are planning to buy a car within 1-2 years.
The release points out that consumer confidence started to increase in the last quarter of last year, with nearly a quarter of car owners considering buying a new car in the next one to two years.
The survey found that 38.1% of respondents would buy a car 6-10 years old, but 23.6% also think it is possible that they would buy a car older than 16 years. However, 19.4% are looking for a vehicle less than 5 years old.
On average, potential buyers were targeting a car of 12 years, lower than the current average age of the Hungarian car fleet of 15.6 years.
Petrol cars remain the most popular – 61.7% - but 44.9% of buyers would buy a diesel one.
29.5% of respondents would spend more than HUF 3 million on a car, but the HUF 2-3 million range was also in demand.
According to the survey, those planning to buy a car would primarily buy from a private individual, but two thirds also consider dealerships as a likely source of supply.
The survey also assessed the perceived risks of buying a car: people's biggest fear is that they will buy a car in poor technical condition with hidden technical defects. They also fear that the car was broken or had its odometer rewound.
