In the middle of this month, a variety of programs await revellers celebrating the capital's 202nd birthday, including the return of the popular Metro Festival, the relaunch of the party tram, and the opening of the city's Christmas market in City Hall Park, according to a statement from the Mayor's Office quoted by MTI.

Key events include a commemoration of the unification of Buda, Pest, and Obuda, as well as the 75th anniversary of Greater Budapest on Nov 17, the Metro Festival, featuring performances by schools, choirs, bands, and dance groups in metro stations from Nov 14 to 16, and the Budapest Christmas Market to be held in the City Hall Park, with an ice rink and handmade goods.

On Nov 15, Gergely Karácsony, the city's mayor, will present the Budapest Heroes Award to employees of city companies for their professional excellence, community engagement and dedication.

Also, the party tram will make a return, departing from Deák Ferenc Square (registration required), with live music, dancing and evening views of Budapest.

On Nov 17, the birthday celebration of Greater Budapest will feature award ceremonies, including the Budapest Prize, Pro Urbe Budapest, and Honorary Citizen of Budapest titles in a ceremony held at the 200-year-old Hungarian Academy of Sciences.

Among the cultural highlights, members of the Budapest Festival Orchestra will perform small concerts in pubs, cafes, and bistros across Pest and Buda.

Further, the Pro Cultura Urbis Foundation is supporting projects that explore and showcase Budapest's cultural heritage. Winners of its grants and the Pro Cultura Urbis Awards will be announced on Nov 21.
