Four days before the end of the year, traffic at the Budapest airport reached a new record: on December 27, this year's 16 millionth passenger crossed the gates of the terminal – for the first time in its history. Thus, the Liszt Ferenc International Airport remains one of the fastest growing airports in the region and in Europe.
The Hungarian capital's airport traffic Last year’s record number, 14.9 million passengers, were reached in 2019 by the end of November, which means an increase of more than one million passengers in annual terms this year. A press release by Budapest Airport says that thanks to the international importance of Budapest, the dynamic expansion of the route network and the appearance of new airlines, passenger traffic in 2019 is again above the European average.
However, the top position in the region does not show only in passenger growth: in 2019, the number of available cities by direct air link has increased by 16%, which means that passengers can now choose from nearly two hundred such routes. 33 new flights have been launched this year, both to new cities and to existing ones, and for 2020, 16 additional flights have been announced by Budapest Airport's airline partners. Long-haul flights, with approximately one million seats available in 2019, also increased significantly, thanks to direct flights to Beijing, Chicago, Doha, Dubai, New York, Philadelphia, Shanghai, Seoul and Toronto. Other Chinese destinations, Chengdu, Chongqing and Sanya, will join them in the near future.
Ferihegy Airport reached its 10 million mark in 2015. This means that the number of passengers arriving to and departing from Budapest increased by six million or 60% in just four years.
