The Hungarian startup ecosystem has had its strongest year yet, with record fundraising and unprecedented optimism but the next one is sure to be tougher, the financial news site PIAC&PROFIT reports.
One of the key lessons from the Hungarian Startup Reports of recent years is that the inadequate regulatory environment is a major pain point for the majority of the businesses that make up the Hungarian startup ecosystem. To change this, an organization needs the most accurate data possible. This year, 165 startups filled in the questionnaire, and Startup Hungary used their answers to create the 2022 Scoreboard.
Last year was one of the most successful years ever for the Hungarian startup scene in terms of funding: startups raised more than EUR 180 million in investment, a 60% increase compared to the previous year. To make the picture more nuanced, this was helped by some exceptionally large funding rounds, such as SEON's record-high investment of USD 94 million, which represents half of the total for 2022.
In addition to these investments, 2022 also saw the largest Hungarian exit ever, with the acquisition of aiMotive by Stellantis. The amount of the acquisition was about twice the size of the previous largest Hungarian exits.
