A biometric ID system has started operating at border control in Budapest's Liszt Ferenc International Airport. Zoltán Török, head of the Airport Police Directorate, said that the system operated on the departure side in order to ensure fast border control.

It reads a passenger's fingerprints and reads passport details in around 20-30 seconds. The whole procedure is over in under a minute. If the passenger is a regular traveller, then the process can be completed even faster.

First of all, however, it is necessary to register passport data at the airport. Thereafter it is possible to use the system at any time within the following three hours. The system can only be used after a checking in.

In the first month, Hungarian citizens above the age of 18 who have a biometric passport can use the system. After that, other types of passport-holders, including those without a biometric passport, will be phased in, provided that they are EU citizens, he said.
