Lidl Hungary and the Hungarian Export Promotion Agency (HEPA) have signed a cooperation agreement to boost the export of domestic agricultural and food products on the EU single market and in foreign trade with third countries, the parties told the state news agency MTI on Wednesday.
According to the statement, Lidl's aim is to ensure that more and more high-quality Hungarian products are offered not only in domestic shops but also in those of the export market target countries. The supermarket chain helps Hungarian suppliers to enter the international market in several ways.
In the statement, Lidl Hungary's Managing Director of Sales, Péter Hajdu explained that through the "Lidl for Hungarian Suppliers" program, they have been working for years to ensure that as many Hungarian products as possible are placed on the shelves of stores in Hungary and on foreign markets, and as a result, last year 726 products from 170 suppliers reached 28 countries, worth around HUF 81 billion.
Lidl has four logistics centers and 191 stores in Hungary, employing more than 8,500 people. More than 4,000 domestic products from 469 Hungarian suppliers can already be found on Lidl's shelves. The company has also achieved outstanding success in wine exports, accounting for a significant share of total domestic bottled wine and sparkling wine exports in 2021, worth around HUF 7.9 billion.
HEPA CEO Kristóf Szabó said in a statement that the cooperation opens up opportunities to develop the export themes of Lidl's supplier academy, and for HEPA's existing food industry clients, it will provide an opportunity for professional consultation that will help them to join Lidl's supply chain.
In addition, companies in the meat, poultry and fruit and vegetable processing industries identified in the export development strategy will be supported in their development through joint supplier days, professional workshops on domestic food export opportunities and knowledge-sharing events, he added.
