Hungarian oil and gas company MOL inaugurated a HUF 2.7 billion biomethane unit at its biogas plant in Szarvas (SE Hungary) on Wednesday.
The biomethane unit will have annual capacity of 7 million cubic meters, enough to cover the annual gas needs of 8,500 households.
The biogas produced at the plant, in operation since 2011, is purified of carbon dioxide using a special process. The resulting biomethane can be fed directly into a grid distribution point located three kilometers away from the plant.
The unit is currently in the testing phase; actual production is scheduled to begin later this month.
It is MOL's first biomethane unit and the third such facility in Hungary. It processes local organic waste and manure to produce 12 million cubic meters of biogas a year. The biogas is currently used to generate green electricity and heat energy.
MOL plans similar projects in Slovakia, Croatia and elsewhere in the region.
