German-owned discount retail chain Lidl held its position as the top seller of fast-moving consumer goods in Hungary in 2025, data compiled by Trade Magazin show.

Turnover of Lidl stores in Hungary was close to HUF 1,802 billion in 2025.

Runner-up was Spar, with turnover of nearly HUF 1,186 billion, followed by Hungarian-owned chain CBA, with turnover of HUF 911 billion.

According to preliminary data, Tesco ranked fourth on the sales leaderboard with sales of 907.4 billion forints. The shift in the top three also pushed COOP, which recorded sales of 887.0 billion forints, down the rankings, resulting in a fifth-place finish.

For the first time this year, Penny, with sales of 678.5 billion forints, surpassed Aldi — which had sales of 644.2 billion forints — in gross sales, causing them to swap places on the list. Auchan finished in eighth place in the sales ranking, followed by Reál, DM, Rossmann, Ecofamily (Napcsillag), Müller, and DÉL-100.

UK-owned Tesco was in fourth place with sales of HUF 907 billion and Hungarian chain COOP was in fifth with turnover of HUF 887 billion.

German-owned Penny was in sixth place, with sales of almost HUF 679 billion, and German discount chain Aldi followed with sales of HUF 644 billion.
