The retail chain Spar Hungary achieved gross sales of HUF 915.7 billion in 2022, 15.6% more than in the previous year, the company's CEO, Gabriella Heiszler said at a press conference in Budapest on Wednesday.
There was a minimal year-on-year decline in the volume of products sold last year, with a very strong first half followed by a second half that was significantly negative in terms of volume, she pointed out.
At the end of 2022, the company operated 623 stores, of which 248 were franchises. The number of employees was around 14,000, with an additional 3,200 people working in franchise stores.
Spar Hungary spent HUF 149 billion on investments in the past five years, including HUF 31 billion last year, the CEO said.
Heiszler Gabriella stressed that Spar's own Regnum meat shops in Bicske and Perbál had significant product developments last year. The net turnover of the meat plant in Bicske exceeded HUF 53 billion and the Perbál plant HUF 8 billion in 2022, while the net turnover of the Spar enjoy.convenience plant in Üllő, which produces ready-made salads, creams and sandwiches, was HUF 2.7 billion.
Last year, Spar opened two new supermarkets and renovated 11 stores.
In both the greenfield investments and the renovations, reducing the environmental impact of operations and increasing energy efficiency are key priorities. Compared to 2017, the store chain's greenhouse gas emissions have been reduced by 49% in five years, Managing Director, Zsolt Szalay said.
