The building of the Hungarian State Opera will be renovated over the two years for approximately HUF 23 billion (that is, currently about EUR 74 million), the public gazette Magyar Közlöny is quoted by the financial website portfolio.hu.
According to the decree, the government consents to the "investment aimed at modernizing the building and its great hall, as well as other related properties affected by a change of function," to be carried out between 2016 and 2018. The total cost of the project can not exceed HUF 23.2 billion.
Reconstruction work will include renovating the facade, modernizing stage equipment, improving comfort and acoustics for the audience, revamping the orchestra pit, restoring antique decorations, as well as replacing aging utilities and installing a new electrical system.
The renovated Opera is scheduled to open on May 24, 2018 - around the time of the next general elections.
