The European Commission's Joint Research Center (JRC) and the European Academies' Science Advisory Council (EASAC) organized an event in Budapest this Wednesday to present a joint JRC-EASAC report on the "Management of Spent Nuclear Fuel and its Waste". The presentation was hosted by the Hungarian Academy of Sciences (MTA), member of EASAC, as part of the regional promotion of the report.
The meeting brought together
scientific experts and policy makers to discuss the different options of spent
nuclear fuel management and to support the development of the national policy
and program related to the management of spent nuclear fuel and waste.
It was
part of a series of national events aimed to trigger dialogue between academia
and policy makers, supporting the national decision on policy options regarding
nuclear spent fuel and radioactive waste management in line with the Directive
2011/70/EURATOM. The presentation took place in the context of Hungary’s
ongoing processes in nuclear energy, including the adoption of a national
policy and program as required by this Directive.
The JRC-EASAC report,
published in September 2014, aims to help policy makers develop national
programs for the future management of spent nuclear fuel and the waste
generated by fuel treatment. It analyses options for spent nuclear fuel
management and their state of development. The report calls for a flexible
adoption strategy, more targeted funding and the need for deep geological
repositories.
