From this Tuesday until August 14, the public can watch free movies sitting on the lawn of the Margaret Island Athletic Center in Budapest. This year's Cinema Island will screen comedies and dramas from Spain, Austria, Poland, Estonia, the Czech Republic, France and Finland.
EUNIC Hungary, the Hungarian network of European cultural institutes, will screen films from recent years that have been favorites of audiences, the organizers told the state news agency MTI.
The series starts on Tuesday evening with the Spanish comedy Sentimental, followed by the Austrian comedy Caviar on the next day and a Polish drama on Thursday: Zupa nic (Bird's Milk), a feature film about a family in Poland in the 1980s.
The stories are as much about everyday life as they are about adventurous journeys, but the eternal theme of love is also present. The characters include middle-aged couples, youngsters living with grandparents, couples preparing for a wedding, a young immigrant boy, a longing heroine, brave women and cowardly men, a university student in search of self-discovery, a control freak housewife, a housewife returning to work and a humanoid robot husband.
The final film in the series will be Paolo Genovese's new film Superheroes. It tells the story of a middle-aged couple in Rome trying to save their relationship, to save it through time, which passes and often reveals conflicts, old secrets and lies.
The films are shown in the original language with Hungarian subtitles.
