UNESCO declared Hollókő, a village NE of Budapest, a World Heritage Site 35 years ago this year, and a photo album was published to mark the anniversary. The publication ‘The Heart of Hollókő - Values, Beauties and Experiences of the Living World Heritage Village" was presented in Budapest this Thursday, the village council informed the Hungarian state news agency MTI.
It was on December 11, 1987 that UNESCO first added Hungarian sites to its World Heritage List: along with the Danube-front view of Budapest and the Buda Castle District, Hollókő was awarded the prestigious title, the statement said.
The exceptional volume provides an insight into the past and present, the built heritage and the still living traditions of the world-famous Palóc village of Nógrád County, which has just 330 inhabitants and has become world-famous.
The Mayor of Hollókő, Csaba Szabó emphasized at the presentation that over the centuries the ancestors had created something that, with the help of heritage experts, Hollókő was placed on the UNESCO World Heritage List at its first nomination – what is more, as the first independent village in the world. Over the last two decades, the village has been developed with service facilities, new attractions and attractions based on local culture. This year, the castle has been reconstructed, and the fortress, built on the rock of the ravens, has been brought to life with an exhibition, bringing the late medieval village and the spirit of the 14th century castle to Hollókő.
