The ministerial commissioner of the Hungarian State Opera House, Adam Horvath, the the management of the institution - in accordance with the National Resources Minister Miklós Réthelyi, and the state secretary for culture Géza Szõcs, decided that the Opera Ball is cancelled this year.
In the argument of this decision it is stated that now that Hungary suffers from the economic crisis and from the impact of several natural disasters, to help it is the most important duty. Cultural institutions, and within this, the Hungarian State Opera should take part in the work that has been undertaken by the government, the country’s other leading institutions and citizens perform to ease the burdens of the needy.
Instead of the ball that was originally planned on March 5, 2011 a great-scale and representative charity gala will be held in the Opera House, and all those who wish to contribute in supporting a noble and human cause are welcomed, including those who originally intended to take part in the Opera Ball.
