The Veszprém-Balaton European Capital of Culture program series want to show the economic power of culture and draw attention to the fact that the creative industries, culture and cultural heritage can become the basis of an economic model. This not only gives a region a specific profile, but can also help economic growth, according to Minister of Regional Development, Tibor Navracsics.
Speaking on the opening day of the Veszprém-Balaton European Capital of Culture program series in Veszprém on Saturday, the minister pointed out that the aim of the program is to showcase Europe's cultural heritage and "our own colors and strengths."
Veszprém mayor Gyula Porga said that when the application was written, participation in the program was seen as a tool for regional, urban and community development. He stated that by 2030 Veszprém aims to be one of the twenty most livable cities in Europe. This is also the objective that will be kept in mind during the implementation of the programs. He added that 116 municipalities joined the program four years ago and that the cooperation with all of them was a success.
The CEO of Veszprém-Balaton 2023 Plc., Alíz Markovits said it was important to make Veszprém’s historic city center vibrant on a daily basis. In addition, the aim was to strengthen local creative communities and organize a year-round program for the inhabitants of small villages, she added.
She said that they also try to add a little color to the events by choosing unconventional venues, such as concerts historical ruin or a festival in an industrial estate. More than 3,000 events will be organized throughout the year.
