11 Hungarian tourists were killed and 27 others injured when their bus overturned in the Egyptian resort city of Hurghada by the Red Sea, 510 kms from the capital Cairo. Four of the injured - a man and three children - are in serious condition. Members of the same tourist group not involved in the accident returned to Budapest on Monday.
State secrretary in the Hungarian Foreign Ministry, Iván Bába confirmed Monday afternoon in Budapest that the four seriously injured Hungarian citizens have been taken to a Cairo hospital while the others are treated in Hurghada.
The Egyptian news agency MENA reported that the tourists were heading to the airport when the bus driver lost control of the steering wheel in a curve. The dead and the injured were taken by ambulance to Hurghada hospital.
The Hungarian ambassador to Egypt, Péter Kveck told the Hungarian news angency MTI that the accident is likely to have been caused by high speed or technical failure or both, and not a crash with a truck as a report suggested earlier.
News reports say road accidents are common in Egypt due to badly maintained roads and the poor enforcement of traffic laws. Police estimate road accidents kill about 6,000 people annually in the nation that has a population of some 82 million.
