Leaders of the Arraiolos Group gathered in Budapest on Friday for a two-day meeting focused on economic cooperation, cultural diversity and employment- promoting strategies. Saturday's meeting spotlighted the EU strategy to boost competitiveness, as well as developments in Libya and the Arab world and the nuclear disaster in Japan.
Heads of state of the Arraiolos Group include the presidents Aníbal Cavaco Silva of Portugal, Heinz Fischer of Austria, Tarja Halonen of Finland, Bronislaw Komorowski of Poland, Pal Schmitt of Hungary, Giorgio Napolitano of Italy Christian Wulff of Germany and Valdis Zatlers of Latvia. Slovenian president Danilo Turk received a special invitation to join this particular session in Budapest. All participants are European Union members.
Earlier in the day, German President Christian Wulff had a separate meeting with Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban, where the two officials underlined the close cooperation between their countries in managing the challenges Europe is facing.
However, the German president also raised measures by the Hungarian government that concern Germans as fellow European citizens: the Hungarian media law, special taxes levied mainly on foreign companies and the speedy process of drafting a new Hungarian constitution.
