Both the defense lawyer and the prosecutor lodged appeal against the acquittal of 97-year-old Nazi war crimes suspect Sandor Kepiro. The first degree sentence on Monday referred to insufficient evidence.
According to a Budapest court, Sándor Képíró is not guilty of complicity in the murder of mainly Jewish and Serbian civilians during a series of reprisal killings in northern Serbia in January 1942. At that time, Hungary was German ally.
Prosecutor Zsolt Falvai was of the view the court's verdict was 'unfounded' and lodged an appeal for a custodial sentence. Defense lawyer Zsolt Zétényi also announced appealing the sentence claiming that the court did not go far enough in clearing his client.
The case will now be heard in Budapest's court of appeals.
