"Honest public debate and peaceful dialogue that will help us achieve durable and lasting peace in American society," says the American Ambassador to Hungary, David B. Cornstein in his social media message, which is also available in Hungarian.
"The senseless death of George Floyd in Minneapolis is a stark reminder of the United States's long struggle to achieve equality for all – for women and men; for black, brown or white; for rich and poor. We can begin to address these inequalities, at least in part, by bringing those responsible to justice – and that process has already begun in Minneapolis. For me as an American citizen, and a life-long resident of New York City, it pains me to see that there is still injustice in our great country, that racism remains a problem we face as a society, and that many people in the United States are resorting to violence instead of peaceful dialogue.
Let's be clear. The loss of any life is a tragedy. Whether we mourn for the victim of police brutality, or for the police officer who dies protecting others, or the peaceful demonstrator who perishes when others resort to violence, it all reminds us that extremism is not the answer. But we can't – and will not – lose hope.
The great American Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. spoke eloquently about our collective efforts to strive higher and higher. Many times he stated that: “The arc of the moral universe is long, but it bends toward justice.”
Our fundamental freedoms make the United States an open nation. Today, more than ever, we do not try to hide the challenges of our society from the world. Rather, it is precisely honest public debate and peaceful dialogue that will help us achieve durable and lasting peace in American society, as well as security, opportunity and dignity for all."
